Haile Selassie ruled Ethiopia from 1892-1975. He led a successful revolution in 1916 against Lij Yasu. When the Italians invaded in 1936, they swiftly overran the Ethiopian army. After the British recaptured Ethiopia in 1942, Selassie returned to the throne. After his return to power Selassie implemented extensive reforms and modernization. In 1963, he helped found the Organization of African Unity. In 1974 Selaisse was overthrown by leftist army officers. He was later killed by the order of Col. Mengistu of the Derg Marxist government.
